Premium vs Budget tyres. Is there really a difference?

posted by

Is opting for a budget tyre a false economy? Are they less safe? Or are premium tyre manufacturers just cashing in on their brand name.

If you have ever enquired about the cost of replacement tyres, you will know that there are a huge range available.  From well known premium brands, to a wide choice of mid-range tyres, to budget tyres from companies that you’ve probably never heard of.

So what are you really getting for your money?

In the wet, the budget tyres took an average of 14 metres – the length of an articulated lorry – longer than the premium tyres to pull up from 70mph. – See more at: http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/introduction/1204998#sthash.W94WDw8Y.dpuf

Premium branded tyres

You know the brands we’re talking about: Goodyear, Michelin, Pirelli, Bridgestone. The kind of brand you’ll see being fitted to Jenson Button’s new Mclaren. But are they really worth the money? Well it depends on the driving conditions. At high speeds in wet conditions the answer is a resounding YES. Whatcar carried out a series of product tests and found that “In the wet, the budget tyres took an average of 14 metres – the length of an articulated lorry – longer than the premium tyres to pull up from 70mph”. click here fore the full article. Premium tyres also offer better fuel efficiency and tend to be quieter than their budget alternatives.  If you do a lot of motorway driving then these tyres may well be worth that bit extra.

Mid Range Tyres

Mid range tyres tend sport familiar premium brand names or are often manufactured by these companies under a different name.  These tyres are often a good compromise for general use, offering more in the way of wear and fuel efficiency than the cheapest alternatives and benefiting from the same technology invested in the premium brands, but at a more reasonable price

Budget Tyres

So are budget tyres a false economy? Are they less safe?  Well it really depends.  Being a budget tyre does not necessarily mean that it is of poor quality.  It comes down to what you expend from the tyre. Broadly speaking budget tryes are more suited for slower speeds, for urban areas and for cars that do relatively low milage.  A budget tyre will most likely perform just as well for your average small runaround car. Just don’t expect to use it to win the world rally championship!
